Photographs
Incontri takes the shape of a collection of photographic fragments found in archival records, handed-down stories and written histories. The story told by Incontri’s images is incomplete. Its gaps, silences, incomplete narratives and dead ends may themselves tell us something about lives lived between languages, places and identities.
The photographs are sourced from HES, local newspapers, civic and commercial archives and popular memory collections. Many have been generously shared with us by people we have met during our research. Some were taken by professional, others are amateur, family snapshots. Often, they are unauthored, their photographer unknown. While the Internet makes old photographs more accessible and digital technology allows people to create and share their own stories as they happen, other images are preserved, maybe discarded, often unseen, in family albums, drawers, suitcases, or plastic bags.
