While most Italians settled in the west of Scotland – particularly in cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh – others made their homes in rural areas and on remote islands, experiencing a different Scotland in smaller towns such as Nairn, Wick, and Thurso, and on islands including Lewis, Orkney and Shetland.
