Café Cultures

From the late nineteenth century onwards, Italian run cafés offered people of different social classes somewhere to meet. Alcohol free premises, they were socially inclusive allowing women in particular public spaces in which to socialise. Often the cafés had a billiard room where men could gather. But these were also places where men and women could mix.
